| The lock complex of Nieuwpoort, better known as ‘De Ganzepoot’, played a crucial role during the First World War. In October 1914, the opening of the locks inundated the IJzervlakte. This ended the advance of the German army. In the Westfront Nieuwpoort visitor centre, you can learn more about this remarkable piece of history via unique objects, interactive modules, personal stories and a 180° projection. At the end of your visit, you are treated to a 360° view of the sea, the coastal strip and the polders, seen from the King Albert I Monument. The ‘Mystery of the Smart Skipper’ is a free experience that takes the youngest visitors along with you (tailored for children aged 8 to 12). | |
| Het sluizencomplex van Nieuwpoort, beter gekend als ‘De Gan- zepoot’, speelde een cruciale rol tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. In oktober 1914 zorgde het openen van de sluizen voor de onder- waterzetting van de IJzervlakte. Daarmee kwam een einde aan de opmars van het Duitse leger. In het bezoekerscentrum Westfront Nieuwpoort kom je via unieke objecten, interactieve modules, persoonlijke verhalen en een 180° projectie meer te weten over dit opmerkelijke stukje geschiedenis. Op het einde van je bezoek wacht je een 360° zicht op de zee, de kuststrook en de polders, gezien vanaf het Koning Albert I-Monument. Het ‘Mysterie van de Slimme Schipper’ is een gratis belevingsbezoekje dat de jongste bezoekers mee op sleeptouw neemt (op maat van kinderen van 8 tot en met 12 jaar) |
