| In het stads- en landhuis van Veurne bevindt zich het belevingscentrum 'Vrij Vaderland'.'Vrij Vaderland' focust op het laatste stukje onbezet België, de 'Belgische Sector'. Van hieruit slaagt Albert I, Koning der Belgen, erin stand te houden tegen de Duitse bezetter. We beleven het verhaal achter het front, het dagelijkse leven in dit laatste stukje onbezet gebied. We zien een smeltkroes van mensen, multiculturaliteit avant la lettre. Veurne en omstreken worden bevolkt door soldaten uit België en de hele wereld, maar ook door vluchtelingen, dokters en verpleegsters. 'Vrij Vaderland' brengt dit verhaal in een sfeervolle scenografie met zowel moderne media als traditionele technieken. | |
| The experience centre in the historic town of Veurne focuses on the last remaining section of Belgium that was not occupied by the Germans, the so-called Belgian Sector. From here, King Albert I succeeded in resisting the German occupying forces. Veurne and the surrounding region were populated by people from all over the country, from other continents as well as by refugees, doctors and nurses. In the experience centre visitors can experience the events behind the frontline, the daily life in this last unoccupied sector of Belgium.They can also witness a real melting pot of people, a multicultural community before the concept even existed. “Vrij Vaderland” uses an interesting scenography to tell this story, combining modern media with traditional exhibition techniques. |
