| Net buiten Brussel maar middenin de glooiende heuvels van het Pajottenland troont het Kasteel van Gaasbeek. De middeleeuwse burcht kende een bewogen geschiedenis en evolueerde van strategisch bolwerk naar riant buitenverblijf. De graaf van Egmond was een van de bekendste eigenaars. Het huidige gebouw kreeg zijn romantische restyling op het einde van de negentiende eeuw dankzij de excentrieke markiezin Arconati Visconti. Zij richtte het kasteel in als museum voor haar enorme kunstcollectie en bespeelde het als historisch theaterdecor. De droomburcht die toen ontstond, heeft ook nu nog iets van een tijdmachine. Je dwaalt er door historiserende interieurs en ontdekt er wandtapijten, schilderijen, meubilair, beelden en andere waardevolle objecten. | The exhibition inquires the way in which modern artists handled Bruegel artistic legacy in the period between and after the wars. Hence we focus on the following artists: James Ensor, Valerius De Saedeleer, Jules De Bruycker, Gustave Van de Woestyne, Jean Brusselmans, Constant Permeke, Anto Carte, Otto Dix and George Grosz. At the same time, the exhibition pulls out various contemporary stops, with art, performance and music. Ten contemporary artists have been invited to delve into the themes from Bruegel’s work. Included artists are Pascale Marthine Tayou, Honoré d’O, Emanuelle Quertain , Gilberto Zorio, Grazia Todori, Anetta Mona, Chisa & Lucia Tkácová, Christoph Fink, Daniel Buren, Jimmie Durham, to name a few. Feast of Fools. Bruegel Rediscovered offers the visitor a total experience with various, mutually reinforcing aspects. The exhibition is being mounted in an ancient castle whose view over the landscape was shaped in the wake of the romantic period and whose collection contains many objects from Bruegel's time, located in a park of c. 50 hectares, with a museum garden which provides an overview of forgotten vegetables, fruit and pruning techniques.
