| Dit didactisch educatieve museum is vernoemd naar de 1ste Belgische psychiater en ondergebracht in het eerste krankzinnigentehuis in ons land (1857). Het heeft als doel de kennis en informatie over psychiatrie beter toegankelijk te maken, vooroordelen te ontkrachten en het mensbeeld te verrijken. Dit door de ontstaansgeschiedenis van de geestesziekenzorg en de evolutie ervan in modernere tijden te belichten. De collectie is opgedeeld in 3 delen: een 1ste deel met de periode van prehistorie tot Middeleeuwen, een 2de deel met het ontstaan van de moderne, op wetenschap gestoelde psychiatrie en het moderne krankzinnigenziekenhuis en het 3de deel gaat over het zich stilaan van de buitenwereld afzonderen van de geesteszieken en hun ziekenhuizen, een van de voorwaarden voor het uitroeien van zoveel geesteszieken door de nazi's in de 'Stille Holocaust'. Pas in de jaren ‘1960 zal de emancipatiebeweging leiden tot een sociale en vaak moeizame (re)integratie van mensen met een mentale aandoening. | |
| Museum Dr. Guislain aims to use its unique past and setting, where the first psychiatric institution in Belgium was founded, to conduct a debate on “what is normal, what is abnormal and how a society deals with this” in a multifaceted and contemporary manner. The permanent collection of the Museum Dr. Guislain consists of three components. The first component is the history of psychiatry, the second is the photographic collection with photographs from 1860 to the present day, and the third is the collection of outsider art. This has evolved from a modest collection with work by people with a psychological disorder into a highly extensive collection with works by artists that each approach art from a “different” perspective. There are also guided tours for people with dementia. |
