| In St. John’s Hospital, worth more than eight centuries of history, pilgrims, travellers and the sick were cared for by sisters and brothers. The medieval wards and the accompanying church and chapel house an impressive collection of archives, art works, medical instruments and six works by Hans Memling. In the adjoining monastery you can visit a 17th century pharmacy. The entrance to the monastery, housing the cloister, pharmacy and guard room, is located on the courtyard and can be reached via a covered alley to the right of the main entrance. The cloister is on the ground floor. You can visit the pharmacy and the guard room via two steps. The large attic above the infirmary with the unique oak roof truss dating back to 1234 is also worth a visit. | |
| Het Sint-Janshospitaal werd gesticht in de eerste helft van de 13e eeuw, op initiatief van de stedelijke overheid en met de steun van de Vlaamse gravin Margaretha van Constantinopel. Hospitaalbroeders en -zusters, die de kloosterregel van de H. Augustinus aannamen, verzorgden er arme zieken en passanten. Het Sint-Janshuis bleef tot op heden in werking, vandaag als bejaardentehuis. In het oude centrale gebouw, waarin vroeger de ziekenzaal was ondergebracht, bevinden zich het museum en de stemmige kapel. Beide zijn een bezoek waard. De museumcollectie telt zowat 500 stukken, zowel liturgisch materiaal als huisraad, waaronder gotische meubelen, schilderijen, zilverwerk, aardewerk, tin,… Het 'Kunstkabinet van Hinsberg' toont aan de hand van een selectie uit het werk van kunstsmid Frans Wiro van Hinsberg (1906-1986) de veelzijdigheid van deze kunstenaar. |
