The Maagdenhuis used to be an orphanage for girls, who were known as ‘maegdeckens’. Inside the beautiful building, visitors can discover the history of the orphan girls and the Antwerp poor. The art collection with show pieces like the oil painting ‘De Zeven Werken van Barmhartigheid’ (The Seven Works of Mercy) from 1500, ‘De Nood Gods’ (Piëta) by Jacob Jordaens, the Wooden Clara or the famous porridge bowls of the orphanage girls fit well in that story. The 16th-century building on the Mechelseplein is a listed monument and forms a unique complex in which to conserve heritage, exhibit it and connect to new social themes. Temporary exhibitions and other cultural initiatives, as well as events in the broad sense, are held in the Maagdenhuis.
