| The Maagdenhuis Museum, the museum of the Antwerp Public Centre for Social Welfare, is located in a historical building dating back to the 16th/17th century, which had long served as the ‘maegdeckens’, an orphanage for girls. The museum tells the story of the poor, the foundlings, and the orphans of Antwerp throughout the centuries. In addition to implements, the museum offers a surprisingly rich collection of paintings and sculptures. | |
| In 1353 stichtte Hendrik Suderman een 'Vrouwenhuis' voor behoeftige en rondtrekkende vrouwen. Precies twee eeuwen later opende in de achterbouw van het pand een school voor 'jonge schamele maegdekens'. In de loop der eeuwen deden weldoeners schenkingen aan het weeshuis, niet zelden schilderijen of andere kunstvoorwerpen. Die verlieten het Maagdenhuis niet, ook niet toen de meisjes zelf in 1882 naar een nieuw weeshuis verhuisden. Het huis werd aangepast als museum, waarin het huidige OCMW zijn kunstpatrimonium bewaart en tentoonstelt. De collectie bestaat uit schilderijen, beelden, meubilair, gebrandschilderd glas, brons, koper en een mooie verzameling Antwerps aardewerk. |
