| The Gothic Saint John’s Church was built between the late 13th and mid-14th century. The church is home to the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary that is carried during the annual Maria-Ommegang, a religious historic pageant. The statue has been worshipped passionately since 1479. The tombstone in front of the altar reveals the essence of the miracle that unfolded: a stillborn child was excavated and found to be alive. The Maria-Ommegang commemorates this miraculous event with an annual procession through the streets of Poperinge, held on the first Sunday in July. There are also several paintings dating from between the 16th and 19th century and some interesting church treasures. | |
| De gotische Sint-Janskerk werd gebouwd tussen de late 13de en het midden van de 14de eeuw. In de kerk staat het miraculeuze Mariabeeld dat tijdens de jaarlijkse Maria-Ommegang wordt meegedragen. Het beeld geniet een levendige verering sinds 1479. De grafsteen voor het altaar verhaalt de essentie van het mirakel dat zich toen voltrok: een doodgeboren kind werd levend ontgraven. De Maria-Ommegang herdenkt jaarlijks op de eerste zondag van juli deze wonderbare gebeurtenis met een optocht door de straten van Poperinge. Verder zijn er nog een aantal 16de- tot 19de-eeuwse schilderijen en een interessante kerkschat. |
