| Het ‘Prinselijk Begijnhof Ten Wijngaarde’ met witgeschilderde gevels en verstilde kloostertuin werd gesticht in 1245. In dit stukje werelderfgoed leefden vroeger begijntjes, geëmancipeerde vrouwen die weliswaar leek waren, maar er toch een vroom en celibatair leven op na hielden. Vandaag wordt het Begijnhof door de zusters van de Orde van Sint-Benedictus bewoond. In het Begijnenhuisje krijg je nog altijd een goed beeld van hoe het dagelijkse leven er in de 17de eeuw uitzag. Let op: de toegangspoorten gaan om 18.30u onherroepelijk dicht. | |
| The ‘Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde’ with its white painted façades and tranquil cloister garden was founded in 1245. This piece of world heritage used to be home to beguines; emancipated women who although lay persons, still led a devout and celibate life. Today the Beguinage is inhabited by the sisters of the Order of St. Benedict. In the Beguinage house, you can still get a good idea of what the daily life was like in the 17th century. Note: the entrance gates close quite definitely at 18:30. |
