| De Markt wordt gedomineerd door het Belfort, al eeuwenlang het praalgebouw van de stad en de ideale uitkijktoren bij oorlog, brand of ander onheil. Zowat in het midden van het plein merk je het standbeeld van Jan Breydel en Pieter De Coninck op, twee Brugse volkshelden die in 1302, tijdens de Guldensporenslag, een belangrijke rol speelden in het Vlaams verzet tegen de Franse overheersing. Vanaf hun standbeeld heb je een mooi zicht op het neogotische Provinciaal Hof (Markt 3). Tot in de 18de eeuw pronkte hier de Waterhalle, de overdekte stapelplaats waar met man en macht geladen en gelost werd. De reien stroomden langs de Markt verder door. Vandaag is dat, weliswaar ondergronds, nog steeds het geval. | |
| The Bruges Markt is dominated by the Belfry, for centuries the city's grandest building and the ideal watchtower in times of war, fire or other calamities. In almost exactly the middle of the square you can see the statue of Jan Breydel and Pieter De Coninck. They were two Bruges folk heroes who played an important role in the Flemish resistance against French rule in 1302, during the Battle of the Golden Spurs. From their statue you have a beautiful view of the neo-Gothic Provincial Court (Markt 3). Until the 18th century, the Waterhalle was based here, a covered depot where the hustle and bustle of loading and unloading took place. The canals continued along the Markt. Although underground, this is still the case today. |
