| While the town of Poperinge had its share of places for soldiers to have a beer, Reverend Clayton offered the troops an alternative– Talbot House. Open to both officers and infantrymen, it was an ‘Every Man’s Club’ and a comfortable retreat offering a library, tea, a walled garden and a chapel in the attic. By organising debates and concerts, the Talbot House offered a touch of refinement often so lacking in war. For 100 years, it has never stopped being the ‘Every Man’s Club’ it set out to be in 1915. Today you can still enjoy a cup of tea in the canteen, read a book, climb to the attic or even spend the night in one of the guest rooms. | |
| De bekendste soldatenclub van de Groote Oorlog onderging een grondige renovatie. De tuin werd opgefleurd en in het huis werden verschillende ruimtes gerestaureerd, waardoor de kapel, de keuken en de hal. Het gloednieuwe tabletsysteem, Tubby's Story Tablets, vormen een digitale gids die je op sleeptouw nemen door het museum, de tuin en het huis. De tablets wijzen de weg en laten je op bepaalde plaatsen halt houden om naar een verhaal te luisteren. Naast een museum is Talbot House ook nog steeds de Every Man's Club die het altijd was. Geniet een kopje thee in de kantine van het huis of reserveer een kamer en breng de nacht door in het museum. De 100e verjaardag werd gevierd op 15 december 2015. |
