In 1831 the Cistercian order founded a new abbey in Westvleterenand, and the Trappist monks brewed their first beer here in 1839. Today 21 monks still live in the abbey and their Trappist beer is renowned all over the world. It has been ranked as best beer worldwide on no fewer than three occasions (2005, 2012 and 2013) in the biennial competition of Rate Beer, a specialised American website for beer lovers. In 1831 stichtte de cisterciënzerorde een nieuwe abdij in Westvleteren. De trappisten brouwden hier hun eerste bier in 1839. Vandaag wonen er nog steeds 21 monniken in de abdij en hun trappistenbier is over de hele wereld bekend. Het won niet minder dan drie keer (2005, 2012 en 2013) de titel van beste bier ter wereld tijdens de tweejaarlijkse wedstrijd van Ratebeer, een gespecialiseerde Amerikaanse website voor bierliefhebbers.
