| In haar Mechelse jaren had Margareta van Oostenrijk een bijzondere band met de nu verdwenen Sint-Pieter-en-Paulkerk. Die stond vlakbij het Paleis van Margareta van Oostenrijk. Een houten brug verbond Margareta’s paleis met haar eigen bidruimte in de middeleeuwse kerk. Na haar dood werd haar maag er begraven. Toen de kerk eind 18de eeuw werd afgebroken, vond de parochie onderdak in de leegstaande, barokke jezuïetenkerk aan de overkant van de straat. De loden urne met Margareta’s maag verhuisde mee naar de ‘nieuwe’ Sint-Pieter-en-Paulkerk, waar ze een plek kreeg vlakbij het hoogaltaar. | |
| During the years she lived in Mechelen, Margaret of Austria had a special relationship with the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, which no longer exists. It was located close to the Palace of Margaret of Austria. A wooden bridge connected Margaret’s palace with her own prayer space in the medieval church. Her intestines were buried here after her death. When the church was demolished at the end of the eighteenth century, the parish church relocated to the vacant, Baroque Jesuit church on the opposite side of the street. The lead urn with Margaret’s intestines moved to the “new” Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, where it was given a new place, near the main altar. | |
