| De Grote Markt is sinds eeuwen het centrale plein van de Mechelse binnenstad. Het wordt beheerst door de Sint-Romboutstoren. Je ziet hem van overal. Aan de andere kant staat het stadhuis. Kijk zeker ook naar de huizen rond de Grote Markt. De historische panden dateren uit verschillende tijden en zijn gebouwd in diverse stijlen, onder meer de 16de-eeuwse renaissance en de rococo uit de 18de eeuw. Een interessant voorbeeld van burgerlijke Brabantse gotiek aan het begin van de 16de eeuw is Huis Keulen (nr. 26). Volgens sommigen is het ontwerp van het huis met trapgevel van de Mechelse bouwmeester Rombout II Keldermans. Hij gold als een van de belangrijkste architecten van de Brabantse gotiek en was in de periode van de bouw stadsarchitect van Mechelen. | |
| For centuries, Grote Markt has been the main square in Mechelen’s city centre. It is dominated by St. Rumbold’s Tower, which you can see from wherever you stand. The town hall stands at the opposite end. Don’t forget to have a look at the houses that line Grote Markt. These historic dwellings date from different eras and were built in different styles, including the sixteenth-century Renaissance and the eighteenth-century Rococo. Huis Keulen (“House Cologne” at no. 26) is an interesting example of early sixteenth-century civilian Brabant Gothic. According to some, Mechelen’s city architect Rombout II Keldermans designed this step-gabled house. He was widely regarded as one of the most important architects of the Brabant Gothic and was the city’s municipal architect at the time of its construction. | |
