| You can find “Our Margret” or “Ons Margriet” as the locals call her, in Schoenmarkt, in between St. Rumbold’s Tower and the Aldermen’s House. She is of course Margaret of Austria, the governess of the Netherlands (1506-1530) and what a woman she was. She had a huge impact on the city. In 1849, Jozef Tuerlinckx received the commission to create a large statue of Margaret of Austria. Many of the cities in the newly-established nation chose to honour their “national heroes” with statues. But Mechelen was the only Belgian city to choose a woman. Initially, Margaret’s statue was installed in Grote Markt. She was moved to her current location when the weight of her statue proved too much for the underground car park that was built in the square. The governess now has a better view of Grote Markt, from her new location, which now looks larger than ever. | |
| Op de Schoenmarkt, tussen de Sint-Romboutstoren en het Schepenhuis, staat ‘Ons Margriet’, het Mechelse koosnaampje voor Margareta van Oostenrijk, landvoogdes van de Nederlanden (1506-1530) en een straffe dame. Haar invloed op de stad was enorm. In 1849 kreeg Jozef Tuerlinckx de opdracht om een groot standbeeld van Margareta te maken. Er verrezen toen in het jonge België veel beelden van ‘nationale helden’. Als enige stad koos Mechelen voor een vrouw. Margareta’s standbeeld stond eerst op de Grote Markt. Ze verhuisde naar haar huidige locatie toen het gewicht van haar beeld te zwaar bleek voor de ondergrondse parking die er werd aangelegd. Op haar prominente plaats heeft de landvoogdes een beter uitzicht op de Grote Markt, die sindsdien groter oogt dan ooit. | |
